Reclaiming Your Loft: A Lantra Certified Technician’s Guide to Rat, Mouse, and Squirrel Control
As a Lantra Level 2 Certified Rodent Control Technician, I often get calls about unwanted guests in lofts. It’s a common problem, and one I’m well-equipped to handle. Rats, mice, and squirrels can turn a quiet attic into a noisy, destructive playground. In this post, I’ll share my insights into identifying these loft invaders and the strategies I use to safely and effectively remove them.
Why the Loft? A Rodent’s Paradise
Lofts offer the perfect combination of shelter, warmth, and (often) access to food. They provide a safe haven from predators and the elements, making them an ideal nesting site. Stored items, insulation materials, and even wiring can become nesting material or a source of food for these unwelcome lodgers.
Identifying the Culprits: Sounds and Signs
Knowing which pest you’re dealing with is the first step. Here’s what I look for:
Rats: I listen for gnawing sounds (they have to constantly gnaw to keep their teeth trimmed), heavier scurrying, and droppings that are larger and more capsule-shaped than mouse droppings. Rats can also leave smear marks along frequently travelled routes.
Mice: Mice are much quieter. I listen for light scratching, rustling, and squeaking. Their droppings are smaller and more rod-shaped. Mice are also more likely to explore and leave evidence of their presence.
Squirrels: Squirrels are usually active during the day. I listen for loud thumping and scampering, especially in the early morning and evening. They can also cause significant damage by gnawing on wood and electrical wiring. You might also find their nests (dreys) which are made of twigs, leaves, and other soft materials.
My Approach: A Lantra Certified Perspective
I hold a Lantra Level 2 certificate means I’m trained in the safe and effective use of rodenticides and other control methods. My approach to loft pest control is always tailored to the specific situation, but it generally involves these steps:
Inspection: I begin with a thorough inspection of the loft to identify the type of pest, the extent of the infestation, and potential entry points. I also look for signs of nesting and food sources.
Proofing: Blocking entry points is crucial. I use a variety of materials, including wire mesh, sealant, and expanding foam, to prevent pests from re-entering the loft. This is often the most important step.
Treatment: Depending on the severity of the infestation, I may use traps, rodenticides, or a combination of both. If using rodenticides, I always place them in secure, tamper-resistant bait stations to protect children, pets, and wildlife. I carefully consider the placement of bait stations to maximise effectiveness and minimise risk. It is illegal to use rodenticides for controlling grey squirrels!
Clearance and Sanitation: Once the pests are gone, it is recommended cleaning and sanitising the loft to remove droppings and nesting materials. This helps to eliminate odours which would encourage more pests and prevent the spread of disease.
Follow-up: If you require scheduled follow-up visits to ensure the infestation is completely eradicated and to check for any signs of re-infestation, this will be arranged.
